Oh, yeah, the entire 20+ book series is infested with Powerful Enemies with Unknown Motives and Mysterious Powers. That might be hard for you to gloss over.
The Archers Beach series is charming, if you want to come at these authors (or at least one of them) from a different angle. (I'd class it as "urban fantasy" except for the fact that it's set in a small town in Maine. Is there a word for that? "Alternate Earth" doesn't seem quite right.)
